Rainbow Toddler mittens

Materials

Safety pin or waste yarn

3.5mm DPNS

50gms Lorna’s Laces Rainbow worsted weight yarn

These mittens fit my son who is just 2 years old but can be adjusted to fit bigger hands by adding extra rows to the length.

The yarn is used doubled throughout which gives a firm finish which is extra warm.

I used Lorna’s Laces worsted weight yarn used doubled throughout but any light aran weight yarn or heavy weight double knitting would give similar results.

Pattern (make 2)

Using 2 strands of Lorna’s Laces worsted weight yarn and 3.5mm DPNS cast on 28 stitches.  Transfer equally to 3 needles and join to work in the round placing a stitch marker to show beginning of rounds.

Work 1.5 inches or desired length in k1 p1 rib.

Work 1 inch of stocking stitch ending at marker.

1)  Slip marker and kfb kfb. Place another marker, knit to end.

2)  Knit one round.

3)  Slip first marker, kfb next stitch.  Knit to stitch before next marker, kfb, knit to end.

4)  Knit one round.

5)  As row 3.

6) Knit one round.

7)  Slip 8 stitches between markers onto a safety pin or waste yarn and remove markers.  Cast on 2 stitches over stitches on safety pin using backwards cast on.  Replace one marker.

Work in stocking stitch until work measures 2 inches or desired length from thumb hole.

Decrease Rows

Place another marker opposite the first  marker.  (14 stitches between markers).

1)  Knit up to 3 stitches before first marker, k2tog k1, slip marker k1, s1, k1 PSSO.  Knit to 3 stitches before second marker, k2tog, k1, slip marker, k1, s1, k1 PSSO.  Knit to end of round.

2)  Knit one round.

3)  Repeat rows 1 and 2 three times more.

Arrange remaining 12 stitches on 2 needles.  (6 stitches on each) and graft together using kitchener stitch.

Thumb

Place the 8 stitches from the safety pin onto 2 needles (4 on each).  Pick up 3 stitches from other side of thumb using 3rd needle and place marker.

Knit 2 rounds in stocking stitch.  (For bigger hands you may need to knit extra rounds and maybe increase a couple of stitches.)

k2tog.

Knit one round.

k2tog.

Knit 2 rounds.  Cut yarn and thread onto a darning needle and thread through stitches.  Draw up tight and fasten off.

Weave in loose ends.

To prevent the gloves getting lost they can be joined with an i cord or a crochet chain.

Toddler fingerless gloves

I made a pair of fingerless gloves the same as I did for DH and myself for Dylan.  He loves them and looks really cute. I cast on 28 stitches and increased so I had 8 stitches for the thumb part.

Hand warmers

I knitted myself some handwarmers for when I am on the computer,  I did the same pattern as I did for him indoors only with less stitches.  I used Twilleys Freedom of Spirit and had just enough wool.

DH’s computer gloves

I made DH a pair of computer gloves for the Winter as there is no heating in the computer room.  I used the basic fingerless mitts pattern and cast on 52 stitches so they  aren’t too tight. I used Freedom of spirit by Twilleys.  I am going to make myself a pair as my hands are always really freezing and Dylan will want a pair so he can be the same as us.

Broad street fingerless gloves

I am knitting some fingerless gloves and finding it really difficult. I have done one glove but it doesn’t look very good at all. I am having real trouble with the second glove as the pattern just says “reverse for right hand”. I am making it up as I go along, pretty much guessing what to do.

Here is a picture of the left hand. It looks okay if you don’t look too closely.

I will be glad when I have finished the damned things.
