Top down Longoria inspired jacket
December 5, 2008 Uncategorized, patterns 2 CommentsI was inspired by the “Longorias something“ and the “Eva raglan pull” pattern but wanted to do it top down and in one piece.
I have written the pattern up in case anyone else prefers to do a top down version.
You can do the body of the pattern in your preferred stitch pattern but I did mine in plain stocking stitch. (Note if you do a different stitch pattern it may alter the sizing of the garment.)
sizes
to fit bust: 32-34” (36-38”, 40-42”, 44-46”)
tension
13cm X 13cm 21 stitches over 27 rows of stocking stitch.
materials
5mm circular needle (I used a 58″ one throughout as I used the magic loop method for the sleeves.)
5mm DPNS if required
waste yarn
buttons
I did the 36-38 size and used 500 grams of cheap aran.
Cable pattern
The cable pattern is done on both ends of the cardigan throughout the pattern
row 1 knit 2, purl 2 knit 12, p2
row 2 purl 2, k2, p12, k2
row 3 k2, p2, slip 4 stitches onto cable needle and hold behind work, k2 stitches, knit the 4 stitches from the cable needle. Put next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at front of work. Knit next 4 stitches then knit the 2 stitches from the cable needle. Purl 2 stitches.
row 4 and subsequent wrong side rows as row 2.
row 5, 7,9,11,13 as row 1.
row 15 as row 3
.
Cast on 87 (91, 95,99) stitches. Do not forget to start your cable pattern!
Row 1 K17 (18, 19, 29) stitches PM, k12 (12,12,12) PM k29 (31, 33, 35) PM, k12 (12, 12, 12) PM, k17 (18, 19, 20)
Row 2 (wrong side) purl
Row 3 (RS): *k to 1 st before marker, kf&b, sl m, kf&b*, repeat from * to * three more times. Knit to the end of the row.
row 4 purl
Repeat rows 3 and 4 21(24, 27, 31) times in total or until required length.
Now slip your stitches onto scrap yarn and try the cardigan on to check the sleeves will meet under the armpits. If your work is not big enough then do a few more rounds of increases.
(With right side rows facing you.) Next row (RS): knit to first marker, slip stitches between next two markers onto scrap yarn (these are the sleeve stitches), cast on 2 (3, 4, 5) stitches to the right-hand needle, knit to next marker, slip stitches between marker to scrap yarn, cast on 2, (3, 4, 5) stitches to right-hand needle, knit to end of row.
Body
Continue working on the body until your work is 2 inches shorter than the required length.
Work 2 inches of k2 p2 rib and cast off.
Sleeves
You can make short or long sleeves. I would have preferred short sleeves but my house is so cold I needed long or it would not get worn.
Slip one lot of the sleeve stitches back onto your circular needle or DPNS.
Pick up and knit 1 (2, 2, 3) stitches under the arm, place marker, pick up and knit 1 (1, 2, 2) stitches, and join for knitting in the round.
Decrease round: k1, ssk, knit around to 3 stitches before marker, k2tog, k1.
Repeat the decrease round every 5th row 10 times or to desired width.
Work straight until sleeve is 2.5 inches short of required length.
You can do a k2 p2 rib or as I did which was p2 rounds, k2 rounds, repeating until work is required length ending by purling 2 rounds. Cast off purlwise.
Collar
You can make your collar separately and sew it on but I picked up stitches as I am useless at seaming.
Pick up one stitch into every neck edge stitch and decide what pattern you want for your collar. I knit 2 rows then purled 2 rows, alternating until the collar was long enough.
You now have to work out where you want your button holes. This was the worst part for me which took me nearly an hour. I made 3 button holes but they were too big for the buttons I bought so had to sew them up to make them smaller. I would suggest buying the buttons first so you know how big to make the holes.
Use your preferred method for making the buttonholes. Here is a guide for making buttonholes.
Space your buttonholes equally and do your collar until it is as deep as you want it to be.
Cast off and weave in ends and sew on buttons.
If you find any problems with this pattern please let me know and I will try to rectify the problem.
